Chapter 5:5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
"Abba Xanthias said, 'A dog is better than I, for he has love and does not judge.'" - Sayings of the Desert Fathers
"A brother asked Abba Alonios, 'What does it mean to debase oneself?' The Elder answered, 'It means to believe that you are lower even than the mute beasts and to recognize that they, unlike you, are not accountable for what they do.'" - Sayings of the Desert Fathers
"Does not the gratitude of the dog shame all who are ungrateful to their benefactors? Many are said to have fallen dead by their murdered masters in lonely places. Others, when a crime has just been committed, have led those who were searching for the murderers, and have caused the criminals to be brought to justice. What will those say who, not content with not loving the Master who has created them and nourished them, have for their friends men whose mouth attacks the Lord, sitting at the same table with them, and, while partaking of their food, blaspheme Him who has given it to them?" - Homilies on the Hexaemeron, Homily 9, by St. Basil the Great
"Rav Yehuda said that Rav said: One is prohibited from eating before feeding his animals, as it is stated: 'And I will give grass in your fields for your animals' first and only then: 'And you shall eat and be satisfied' (Deuteronomy 11:15). In the verse, preparation of food for one’s cattle precedes preparation of his own food. Consequently, it is considered part of the preparation for one’s own meal." - Berakhot 40a
